Reopening Grande de Pancho’s Tuesday, Mar 31 2009

img_03494img_03541They say girls from New Orleans may move away for a spell, but they always find their way back home.  The same can be said for bad Mexican buffet restaurants.  The Mexican flag de Pancho’s was officially re-hoisted in New Orleans for good this week, or at least until another storm comes along and frightens it away.

Loyalists will debate the pros and cons of the new self-serve buffet line, but those in attendance  – The Weathers Report has yet to end its boycott of the defected eatery – reported a dynamic and festive, if indigestive, dining experience.  Perhaps this is just the change needed to recapture the title of fattest state in America.  ¿We’re Numero Uno?

Soft Opening and Soft Tacos Sunday, Mar 29 2009

From an avid reader of The Weathers Report:

When my mom was pregnant with me she ate there 5 out 7 days in the week, and it was a weekly visit to Pancho’s ever since my birth.
I am now 16, and cannot wait to go eat the food that is in my blood.

And from the Unofficial Pancho’s Facebook Page:

Thank you for your response. The ‘soft’ opening was great. People were singing and dancing and Panchito Metairie was taking pictures with everyone! It was indeed a good time.

If you’ve been, you would have noticed that the size of the place has much more seating than the old one on Veterans Blvd. And the way the self-serve is set up works really well. I must admit that I was skeptical about serving myself, however, it worked out well and I didn’t once miss the old way at all.

I want to thank the people that came up to me and introduced themselves. It was nice to meet all of you. I’m sure I will meet many more as time goes by.

Yours truly,

And finally, a tragic tale from the Facebook group:

at 3:11pm yesterday
This just totally wasted our time driving from Slidell to Pancho’s only to discover they open on Monday. Imagine all the money they lost out on because lots of people were constantly driving up.

Pancho’s Fanatics Plot Reopening Fiesta Saturday, Feb 28 2009

My Letter To Pancho’s Corporate office and Anna Felty

February 27 at 9:27pm

To whom it may concern,

I lived directly behind your location on Veterans Blvd. in Metairie all of my life and was raised on Pancho’s. Much to my delight I now see that you are re-opening at the location on Airline Drive and Labarre Road. I have organized a party for the grand opening of your new location. The confirmed list of guests is 850 people and quickly growing. I have attached a link to the invite page on “Facebook”. As of right now we have the party set for Friday March 27th 2009.

If by chance you will be opening sooner or later than that can you contact me and let me know? We are true and loyal Pancho’s fanatics and will actually be tailgating in the parking lot that morning. We as a group want to ensure that this location will be profitable for you and always around for us. That being said If all goes well You will have a full house for a while to come.

Please contact me back at your earliest convenience. I would like to stay organized with you as well as this vastly growing group of local Pancho’s fanatics.

New Orleans Not Very Miserable Monday, Feb 9 2009

Congratulations are in order for the City of New Orleans, which did not rank on the’s top ten list of America’s Most Miserable Cities. Instead, cities like Chicago, Memphis, and Flint, Michigan topped the list.

However, the results were misleading as the study was done prior to the imminent reopening of Pancho’s Mexican Buffet.

Panchomania Sweeps New Orleans Thursday, Feb 5 2009

The Weathers Report has unintentionally and ironically become the “Bring Back Pancho’s” online community of record. Just google Pancho’s New Orleans. The comments warrant their own post.

  • I can’t beleive its really happening…lol!!! NO SERIOUSLLY!!! Me and almost about everyone I know is completely in love w/Ponchos!! I recently flew to TX to visit a friend and had to find the closest Ponchos! Can’t wait to have it around the corner!!!!!!!
  • hey everyone panchos is reopening and someone started a myspace so you can show your excitement
  • I have heard from a good source that Panchos will be reopening sometime in Feb/March 09 at the old Ho-Ho’s Buffet location in Metairie at Airline and Causeway Blvd.
  • I heard that Panchos will be openening soon at the old Steak and Ale location on Vets! I can’t wait!
  • I was told that Pancho’s will be opening before Christmas 2008. Could you please offer any information about this. Please open a new Pancho’s. Everyone I know misses Pancho’s. It would be great if you could open one on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish. Like Jerry said “If you build, they will come”.
  • I would like to thank the owner in Bossier City for trying to open a franchise in the New Orleans are. Please consider the Westbank of the city. No matter though,IF YOU BUILD, THEY WILL COME!! Jerry
  • GOOD NEWS!!!!! The franchise owner from Bossier is trying to reopen there by early 2009 Robert Cohen, Chief Operations Officer, Panchos Mexican Buffet Inc., 4360 Western Center Blvd., Ft. Worth, Tx. 76137
  • Just couldn’t happen to a better place. And what is with them not having insurance to cover Katrina’s damages?? They certainly were packed with people every weekend so money obviously wasn’t an issue. Sigh..
  • Here it is, Nov 2007 and still no plans to re-open/re-establish Panchos anywhere within driving distance of New Orleans. Sorry but Shreveport is just a bit too far of a drive from the Northshore!
  • There are only a couple of really good mexican restaurants on the Northshore, but they are a bit pricey and do not have a buffet like Panchos did. I think I will miss their cheese enchiladas and salsa/chips the most. Theirs was the best!!
  • I just found this site while searching to see if Pancho’s had reopened in New Orleans. I love that place. I can’t tell you how much my family loves to go there to eat when we visit my hometown of Bossier City, LA. Here in Mississippi there isn’t a place like that to enjoy. Why don’t you come here and put in a Pancho’s. The closest one I know of is in Bossier. It sure would fill a craving for a whole bunch of us. Really sorry for New Orlenans loss.
  • I have many fond memories of meeting my friends and family at the Pancho’s on Vets in Metairie. I was sad to see the Chalmette location go back in the 90’s. Please come home Pancho’s, I need flautas and sopapila’s stat! Carl Green
  • PLEASE REOPN PANCHO’S – come to the northshore of Lake Ponchartrain. WE NEED PANCHOS… kids need therapy now because they can’t get their FIX!
  • I’m sure you have heard this a million times before but please come back to louisiana. We miss pacho’s so very much.Pancho’s has been a family place in our family for over 25 years. In fact I raised my two children on Pacho’s mexican food.As a family meeting place for our huge family. I live in Ponchatoula, La. and we would cross the causeway bridge every weekend to meet the rest of the family.Maybe you would consider reopening in Hammond la. We have tried other mexican restuarant’s but none compare.Even if you would charge more for your buffet I’m possitive it would a great and welcomed success.MISSING YOU GREATLY,LINDA AND FAMILY.
  • Sure it was the gastro-intestinal equivalent of a Danielle Steel novel, but it was a favorite haunt. It was a wonderfully affordable vice and now it is gone. Excuse me… I am tearing up a bit… sort of like I did about 90 minutes after visiting Pancho’s.
  • The idea that Pancho’s has “no plans to rebuild there or relocate elsewhere in the area” because it “it is no longer safe to operate there” is an insult to the intelligence of everyone who ever stood in line for a rancid flauta.

Pancho’s Threatens to Reopen in Ho-Hos Thursday, Jan 29 2009

Our worst fears have been confirmed. According to a post on the Facebook group “R.I.P. Pancho’s on Veterans,” a misguided group that places their gluttonous desire for flag-raising-on demand sopapillas over any disdain for the Texas company that abandoned the city after Katrina, Panchito Metairie writes that Pancho’s is in fact opening in the old Ho Ho Super Buffet location as early as March 2009.

The best thing to come out of Hurricane Katrina next to a single assessor . . . is no more.

Yes, it’s true! We are opening in the old Ho Ho Super Buffet location, and are shooting for sometime in March. We don’t want to give a firm date yet, because we don’t want to disappoint anyone if we run into delays. We will keep you updated.

In the meantime, be thinking of what you want to wear for the Grand Opening Photos. We want to take lots of them so we can create a “Wall of Fame” to honor our fans who did not give up!

We are thinking of displaying some pictures of the old location as well, so if you have some you would like to share, let us know.
